I’ve often found that less is more when it comes to directing portrait subjects. The young lady in this shot was very good at listening to what her parents and I were asking her to do. However, my favorite photo from the entire shoot was this candid moment where she is just being herself. This doesn’t just apply to children. Always give your subjects a chance to be themselves and you’ll find these can be the most engaging images from a portrait session.
